23 Top Things to Do in Southern California
Beach Bliss
Catch a Wave in San Diego
- If you’re not afraid to take a dip in the ocean, exploring the California surf scene is a must-try experience. Even if you’re a total newbie, there are tons of schools that’ll get you hanging ten in no time. Hit up La Jolla Shores for some gentle waves for beginners. Don’t miss the sea lions sunbathing while you’re there, either!
Soak in the Sunset on Santa Monica Pier
- There’s something magical about watching the sun dip into the ocean from this iconic spot. Grab some ice cream, vibe to the street performers, and enjoy that golden hour glow.
Host a S’mores and Stars Night at Dockweiler Beach
- Dockweiler is one of the few beaches that still allows bonfires. It’s a chill spot to regroup after a day of sightseeing or shopping.
Desert Dreams
Stargazing in Joshua Tree
- Okay, the night sky in Joshua Tree National Park? Mind-blowing. I’ve never seen so many stars in my life. Pack a blanket and some hot cocoa, and prepare to see sparkling views that’ll have you reeling.
Sky-High Views in Palm Springs | The Aerial Tramway
- Want to see the desert from a whole new angle? This rotating tram car takes you on a jaw-dropping ride up the side of a mountain. The view at the top? Worth. Every. Penny.
Bliss Out in Desert Hot Springs
- After busting moves at the wedding, your muscles will be begging for a soak in these natural hot springs. I’m obsessed with Two Bunch Palms Resort—it’s an amazing hotel with world-class amenities.
Mountain Majesty
Hike it Out in Big Bear
- Big Bear Lake is a total stunner year-round. In summer, I’m all about the Pine Knot Trail for those Insta-worthy views. Visiting in the winter? Time to hit the slopes and shred some powder!
Zip Through the San Gabriel Mountains
- Adrenaline junkies, this one’s for you! Soaring through the treetops on a zipline near Wrightwood? It’s the ultimate rush.
Cruise the Rim of the World Highway
- This winding road serves up some seriously breathtaking views of the San Bernardino Mountains. Pro tip: Stop at the lookout points for some killer photo ops.
Wine Country Wonders
Sip and Savor in Temecula
- Move over, Napa! Temecula Valley is where it’s at for wine lovers. My go-to? Baily Vineyard & Winery. Their tasting room is cozy AF, and don’t even get me started on their reds.
Float Over Vineyards
- Seeing the vineyards from a hot air balloon at sunrise? Next level. It’s one of those bucket list experiences you’ll be talking about forever. Just make sure to book ahead!
Go to a Stomping Party… Because Wine Not?
- Some wineries let you release some inner rage and stomp grapes during harvest season. It’s messy, silly, and ridiculously fun.
Urban Adventures
Dance at the Hollywood Bowl
- There’s nothing like an outdoor concert under the stars. Pack a picnic, bring your crew, and enjoy some world-class tunes in this iconic venue.
Eat Your Way Through Downtown LA
- From landmarks like the historic Grand Central Market to trendy taco shops, DTLA is foodie heaven. My hot take? The sliders at Eggslut are life-changing.
Wander the Venice Canals
- These hidden waterways are like a little slice of European architecture right in LA. Rent a paddleboard or just stroll along the charming footbridges. It’s a cute neighborhood.

- Weather App – SoCal weather is usually perfect, but it’s always good to double-check. I swear by Weather Underground for spot-on forecasts.
- Traffic Savior – LA traffic can be a nightmare. The Waze app is a lifesaver for finding the best routes.
- Public Transit Made Easy – If you’re braving LA’s public transit, the LA Metro app is a must-have.

FAQs for the Extra Prepared Traveler
Do I need a car in Southern California?
While having wheels is handy, it’s not always a must. In cities like LA and San Diego, you can totally get by with ride-sharing apps or public transit. But if you’re planning to bounce around different areas, renting a car is your best bet.
Is it really always sunny in Southern California?
Okay, so we do get a ton of sunshine, but it’s not always bikini weather! Winters can actually be pretty cool and rainy, especially inland. And don’t forget about those sneaky microclimates – it might be tank-top weather in LA and sweater weather at the beach.
Are there any popular restaurants that you recommend?
Yes! There are wayyyy too many to choose from, but here are some you shouldn’t miss…
City |
Must-Try Food |
Los Angeles County |
Tacos from Leo’s Taco Truck |
San Diego |
Fish tacos at Oscar’s Mexican Seafood |
Palm Springs |
Date shake at Shields Date Garden |
Temecula |
Farm-to-table dinner at The Farmhouse at Ojai Valley Inn |
How do I dodge the crazy LA traffic?
Honestly? Time travel! But since that’s not a thing (yet), try to avoid rush hours (usually 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM). Use traffic apps and consider taking the scenic route—it might be longer, but it’s way more chill.
Should I be worried about earthquakes or wildfires?
Earthquakes and wildfires are, unfortunately, now part of SoCal life, but don’t let them scare you off. For quakes, most are tiny tremors you might sleep right through. As for wildfires, they’re more of a summer/fall thing and usually happen in rural areas. Just keep an eye on local news if you’re heading to the boonies. In the cities? You’re more likely to get a sunburn than see any action from Mother Nature.
What’s the best way to spot celebrities?
First rule of celeb spotting? Play it cool! Hang out in spots like West Hollywood or Beverly Hills. But remember, celebs are just people trying to live their lives – so maybe don’t go full paparazzi if you do see one! Keep the photography respectful.
Is Southern California expensive?
Certain areas can be pricey, not gonna lie. But there are tons of ways to save! Look for free museum days, pack picnics for the beach, and hit up happy hour deals. And remember, national parks and sunshine are always free!
